Though Hill has been a factor on the field both defensively and on special teams, the former No. 1 safety in the country has yet to show everyone why he was such a highly-coveted recruit coming out of high school. With the Michigan defense desperately looking for leadership in the secondary, it looks like it might finally be Hill's time to shine. Rankings from AP Poll. The 2020 Michigan Wolverines football team represented the University of Michigan in the sport of college football during the 2020 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The Wolverines played in the East Division of the Big Ten Conference and played their home games at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
All eyes are on the quarterback position at Michigan yet again. Two names remain that could be the head of the team heading into Harbaugh's seventh season after another batch of quarterback transfers. Junior Cade McNamara and the aforementioned McCarthy will likely duke it out for the starting role. McNamara has the experience of playing in four games last season and performing admirably when healthy. Unfortunately, most of those moments came in blowout losses or against Rutgers, but there was still a lot to like from what McNamara showed on the field last season. News began trickling out that quarterback Dylan McCaffrey — who was competing for the starting job — planned to opt out of the season and transfer.
Around that time, offensive tackle Jalen Mayfield's father, Brian, reiterated to the Free Press that his son had no plans to backtrack on his decision to opt out and declare for the 2021 NFL draft. And hours later, Sports Illustrated reported that star receiver Nico Collins had signed with agent Drew Rosenhaus — news that, in all likelihood, means Collins will not be joining his teammates Oct. 24. Penn State opened the scoring in the first quarter via a six-yard touchdown run from Keyvone Lee. Michigan responded with a two-yard touchdown run from Hassan Haskins. Penn State scored 10 points in the second quarter via a 28-yard touchdown run from Sean Clifford and a 22-yard field goal by Jake Pinegar, which made the score 17–7 in favor of Penn State at half-time. The teams exchanged field goals in the third quarter, via a 40-yard field goal by Jake Moody for Michigan and a 33-yard field goal by Jake Pinegar for Penn State.
The teams exchanged touchdowns in the fourth quarter, via a two-yard touchdown run from Haskins for Michigan and a two-yard touchdown run from Will Levis for Penn State. Fans are rightfully riding the McCarthy hype train heading into this battle. He's easily the best quarterback prospect that Harbaugh has brought in so far as the No. 2 pro-style QB and the No. 24 overall player in the 2021 recruiting class. The question is whether or not he can live up to those expectations. We have seen countless quarterbacks come in and out of Schembechler Hall over the last few seasons and none have emerged as the great quarterbacks they were touted to be.
We'll have a chance to get an early idea from the coaching staff and players this spring. Michigan could really use a lift from Smith and Chris Hinton at the defensive tackle spot this season. It was the team's weakest position in 2019, and both players were highly ranked members of the 2019 recruiting class.
Smith figures to at least be part of the rotation after appearing in a couple of games late last year. The West Bloomfield High School graduate was reportedly in the mix for a starting spot at safety when Michigan was mulling a move to cornerback for Daxton Hill, but now he'll be one of the primary backups. Whether he gets in on defense or not, Paige should at least contribute on special teams. Hill-Green is the type of player who would probably only see the field in four games of a regular season so Michigan could preserve a redshirt. But since 2020 isn't counting against eligibility, Hill-Green could very well get into the game as a reserve linebacker or on special teams, since he was reportedly battling for playing time during fall camp. The Big Ten Conference initially cancelled the fall sports season, on August 11, 2020, but reversed course on September 16, announcing an eight-game conference-only schedule.
Michigan's previously scheduled nonconference games against Washington, Ball State, and Arkansas State were canceled due to the pandemic. Precautions were taken to promote player, staff, and fan safety, including regular COVID-19 testing, isolation requirements, and mask wearing; games were largely played with no fans in attendance. — Offensive lineman Andrew Vastardis, who started four games at center for the Wolverines in 2020, is back for a sixth year as a graduate student. Since the NCAA didn't technically count last fall against player eligibility, he was able to return. That should help with depth over the middle after Zach Carpenter opted to transfer this offseason.
Everyone is waiting to see how Michigan looks in 2021 — at quarterback, along the offensive line, defensively and really just overall after a lackluster, 2-4 campaign in 2020. Michigan fans are waiting to see some highly-touted true freshmen, some young players in more prominent roles and at least one fan favorite returning from injury. Here are our lists of Wolverines we're most excited to see in 2021. For a team that already lacks depth at key positions, it can't afford any losses to COVID-19, which could amount to a player missing 37.5% of the season because of a positive diagnosis. Collins was the star receiver who returned to Ann Arbor for his senior season and seemed poised to have a big year in the offense. Mayfield, as a junior, was the most promising draft prospect on the team.Ambry Thomas was the team's No. 1 cornerback, but now is headed to the NFL draft.
And McCaffrey was the program's most experienced and productive returning quarterback. Like Paige, his West Bloomfield teammate, Wheeler has a chance to get in on the action his very first college game. He won't be a starting linebacker, but coaches said he's ready to contribute early. The official attendance of 615 was the smallest football crowd in Michigan Stadium history. Graduate student kicker Quinn Nordin was successful on his first field-goal attempt of the season for 23 yards in the second quarter. It was the 41st field goal of Nordin's career, which ranks fifth among Michigan's all-time leaders.
Michigan was originally scheduled to play non-conference games against Washington, Ball State, and Arkansas State; and conference games against Ohio State, Maryland, and Iowa. However those games were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Big Ten Conference announced on July 9 that if the conference is to participate in a fall sports season, member schools will play a conference-only schedule. The Big Ten announced a revised schedule on August 5, which was scrapped when the conference announced postponement of the season on August 11. By all accounts, sophomore running back Blake Corum has positioned himself as one of the top two running backs returning to Michigan - along with veteran running back Hassan Haskins.
During the 2020 season, Corum needed to split reps with three other running backs on the roster - Haskins, Zach Charbonnet and Chris Evans. That is all expected to change in 2021 with new running backs coach Mike Hart in town and Charbonnet and Evans no longer on the roster. Personally speaking, I'd be shocked if Corum didn't solidify himself as the top running back on the roster by mid-season. Paige competed in all six games during his freshman year and earned the high praise from former defensive coordinator Don Brown as a player who competes at the highest level. Paige notched a career-high three tackles during his first game as a Michigan Wolverine, playing on the road at Minnesota in week one and on national television.
It's no secret that the Michigan secondary struggled mightily in 2020, but a new defensive scheme and an entire year of experience should spell good things for Paige in year two. The Wolverines have lost just one conference game in 2021, and it was against one of their biggest rivals, Michigan State. Harbaugh has struggled to beat Michigan State and Ohio State since becoming the coach in 2015, but the Wolverines did beat Penn State in Happy Valley earlier this season. Every team runs into depth chart issues at some point or another .
The big question, though, is what might constitute a rebuild during COVID-19. Vilain's college career has been a story of bad luck so far, as injuries derailed his first two seasons on campus. He was finally healthy last year and played in seven games, but never quite got fully into the mix. This season, he should have opportunities to prove himself as a rotational defensive lineman.
The Michigan coaching staff was excited about landing Welschof out of Germany, even though he figured to be a bit of a project. After two seasons in the system, he's one of the players in the rotation as a backup defensive lineman. Ojabo hadn't played much football when he got to Michigan, and he's still behind Ben VanSumeren at SAM linebacker. But he didn't see game action as a true freshman and 2020 is an opportunity to gets his feet wet.
Look for him to get in on special teams or if Brown uses a deep pass rushing rotation. By all accounts, Carpenter was expected to be right there with Andrew Vastardis in the battle for Michigan's starting center job, but an injury that caused him to miss some time gave Vastardis a leg up. Warinner said this week that Carpenter has been getting some run with the starters, so it wouldn't be a surprise to see him in the game at some point on offense or special teams. In today's college football landscape, a scholarship offer doesn't necessarily mean a school invested a lot of time and resources into a player's recruitment. Fleck might have offered some of these players without much hope of them ending up at Minnesota.
On August 11, the Big Ten announced that all fall sports, including football, would be indefinitely postponed due to COVID-19. The conference allowed for the possibility of competition in these sports to begin in the spring. However, the conference later announced the season would begin on October 23, with a schedule to be announced on September 19.
The Michigan Wolverines have officially released an updated roster with spring football underway. Quite a few familiar names are sticking around for the 2021 season, while there are other developments to parse through as well. When Jim Harbaugh revealed the starters on the offensive line earlier this week, he said he considers Barnhart a sixth starter. Barnhart isn't likely to get as many reps as the other starters, but it sounds like he'll be part of the game plan in some way, even if it's just on special teams or as part of the O-line rotation. With the rest of their season cancelled, the loss to Penn State meant Michigan won no games at home for the first time in program history; the Wolverines played their first game in Ann Arbor in 1883. Quinn Nordin's 46-yard field goal in the third quarter was his 14th career field goal at 40-yards or longer, setting a Michigan program record.
With the loss to Wisconsin, Michigan had their first 1–3 start to a season since 1967. On July 9, the Big Ten Conference announced that it would adopt "a conference-only season" for all sports due to the coronavirus pandemic. The decision resulted in the cancellation of the first three games of Michigan's 2020 season against Washington, Ball State, and Arkansas State. The COVID-19 pandemic led to the cancellation of all University of Michigan athletic activities during the spring of 2020, including the football team's annual spring game. The pandemic also led to cancellation of the team's international trip for the first time since 2016. Quarterback Joe Milton began the season as the team's starting quarterback, but by the end of the season he had been replaced by backup Cade McNamara.
The team's leading rusher was Hassan Haskins, with 375 yards, and the team's leading receiver was Ronnie Bell with 401 receiving yards. On defense, lineman Kwity Paye led the team in tackles-for-loss and was named second-team all-conference. After rising to 13th in the polls, Michigan was upset by unranked in-state rival Michigan State. After losing two more games against ranked opponents Indiana and Wisconsin, Michigan won a triple-overtime game against Rutgers, and lost to Penn State the following week. Michigan's final three conference games, against Maryland, Ohio State, and Iowa, were canceled due to COVID-19 outbreaks.
While the NCAA's win requirements for bowl eligibility were lifted for the season, Michigan was not selected to a bowl game for the first time since 2014, ending the season with a 2–4 record. The Wolverines released their latest roster, which means there's a lot of information we can glean. From number and position changes to weight gains or losses, there's a lot to note about this team.
Below, we cover the most interesting things we found as we get into our 2021 Michigan football roster takeaways and analysis. — Jack Stewart, a former three-star prospect in Michigan's 2019 recruiting class, has apparently switched to playing defensive line. The 6-foot-4, 318-pound Stewart arrived as an offensive tackle, redshirted his freshman season and did not see any playing time in 2020. Michigan football's 2021 spring roster is out, quietly released Wednesday evening by the program, and while there aren't a ton of surprises on it we do have updated heights and weights for the early enrollees. Hutchinson's season-ending injury in 2020 all but guaranteed his return to Michigan in 2021.
The returning captain has plenty of unfinished business in Ann Arbor and will likely serve as the focal point on Harbaugh's new-look defense, led by first-year defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald. With many draft boards already predicting Hutchinson to go in the first round of the NFL draft, look for him to be eager to prove what he's fully capable of. If you're excited about seeing Donovan Edwards on the field this fall, join the club. Though I don't expect Edwards to contend with Haskins and Corum in year one, I do expect that Jim Harbaugh and Josh Gattis will do everything they can to get Edwards on the field and to utilize his elite athleticism this fall.
